A Conversation with Kim Schoenstadt

Sunday, February 23 – 3 to 4:30 p.m.
Kim Schoenstadt’s international site-specific installations are inspired by the intersections of architecture, sculpture, color, line, history, culture and concepts based around overlapping points in time. Each piece creates multiple realities simultaneously through skillfully orchestrated compositions. The artist states, “My work has always had two interlocking avenues of inquiry. The more visible part of my studio practice involves a formal interrogation of architecture and environments through drawing and installation work. The other less conspicuous side engages more sociologically and conceptually with groups of people in order to inform a work’s content.” Schoenstadt is interested in the power of art to change one’s relationship with space and educate the viewer of the history and culture of a place. Among her current projects, is a permanent installation at the Los Angeles County Metro’s Fairview Heights Station. She is also known for her ongoing series, Now Be Here, group photographs taken of hundreds of female artists. The project addresses the issue of gender underrepresentation in contemporary art museums. Kim Schoenstadt was born in Chicago, Illinois and received her BFA from Pitzer College in Claremont, CA.
