Gerd Koch, mentor and lifelong friend

Donna experimented with paint on Polaroids with many of her artist friends as available models, gaining national attention.

In 1992, the pivotal moment came while Donna was a working as a waitress at The Hungry Hunter:  she fell down the stairs, dislocated her shoulder and was unable to work or hold a camera for a full year.  Her convalescence gave her time to sift through mounds of slide images that she had taken of the local artist community.  It was a reflection of our creative community’s history.

Newman’s images of great artists including Andrew Wyeth, Alfred Steiglitz & Georgia O’Keeffe and Igor Stravinsky were of great influence and inspiration to Donna while attending Brooks Institute of Photography.

The World Of Art City
The World Of Art City

The inspiring collection of artists at Art City led to Donna’s creation of The World of Art City.

This was a technological feat using 6 synchronized projectors and still photographs which premiered at Ventura City Hall Council Chambers in 1994.

Beginning Of Tuesday Talks
Beginning Of Tuesday Talks

Donna Granata began the Tuesday Talks as a lecture series at the Gayel Childress Gallery and Frame Shop on El Roblar in Ojai in 1996.  The first subject was Beatrice Wood.

Sergio Aragon‏‏es was the next to be highlighted. He asked if he could join Donna.  She said “Of course!”, and the interview series was born.

The first FOTM offices were in Donna’s home. This is where the Getty came to do research on Horace Bristol in 1998  for his retrospective in 2002.

Donna’s documentation of photographer Horace Bristol started in 1996.
Corbis Stock Agency (later acquired by the Getty) began scanning his images, with Donna as a very interested peripheral assistant and observer.
That’s when she realized that the documentation process was much more than just an interview.
