It seems that BiJian Fan – paper sculptor extraordinaire – is everywhere. Strictly speaking, his art is not all paper as he employs a number of different materials, including metal, holographic paper and polymer. He learned the art of paper folding and paper cutting from his grandmother. He channels his creative energy into contemporary forms of paper sculpture, integrating folding, cutting, and other techniques into his artistic expression. Growing up he was expected to be a high-achiever, a “dragon child.” Fan studied in China, Japan, and USA, earning an M.A. in Mathematics and Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering. BiJian values creativity in art, science, and life.   Fan is an artist who says his “scientific studies have wondrously provided the skills and disciplined creativity needed” to achieve ever greater artistic accomplishments.  His works have been exhibited at the Gull Wings Children’s Museum (formerly in Oxnard), the Museum of Ventura County, and was exhibited at the Olympic Culture Festival in Beijing. A dragon graces the 2012 McDonald’s Lunar New Year Calendar.
