Tidepool Biodiversity

Artwork by 5th graders from Mar Vista Elementary in Oxnard who participated in Vamos a la Playa! with the Merito Foundation.  They visited local beaches and learned about tidepools, marine life, ocean habitats and the importance of protecting them.

Learning to See Outreach then visited their classroom where the students visually expressed what they learned, with inspiration from Focus on the Masters Documented Artist, Connie Jenkins.

“The places in my paintings exist in spite of our careless disregard.  These places survive with the duality of our desires—to consume and to preserve.  It is my hope that the experience of viewing these works can bring a greater awareness of the value of these astonishing habitats, inspiring a sense of responsibility for their protection and preservation.”

Tidepool drawings inspired by painter Connie Jenkins

Connie Jenkins is an accomplished Realist painter whose large-scale canvasses feature rocks, water and the natural landscape, but also contain elements that are not as easily identified. Her images often represent the push/pull interrelated forces of yin and yang. Jenkin’s series record cycles of the moon, tides or seasons that parallel the passage of time in the human life cycle. Her paintings deal with birth, aging, death, and ultimately, rebirth.
