Focus on the Masters’ Learning To See Outreach is an award-winning, in-school, cross-curricular program with an emphasis on critical thinking, innovation and diversity. Each lesson is inspired by the artwork and life stories of extraordinary artists in our community.  Our instructors are all professional artists with extensive teaching experience.

You can create beautiful designs with just a paper, a ruler, small plastic lid and pencil and then whatever you want to use for color!

Don’t have a ruler?  No problem – as long as they only need to be even spaces and not exact inches.

All you need is a piece of notebook paper and a pencil!

People have been creating these beautiful tiles for over a thousand years!  The people today learned from the people before them.  We can trace the history of our tiles today all the way back to the Islamic Empire where they used math, patterns and symmetry to create amazing designs!

RTK Studios – Richard Keith & Mary Kennedy of Ojai – present day

Catalina & Malibu tiles – early 20th century

Mexican tiles – 1400’s to present

Spanish tiles – over 1,000 years ago to present

Islamic tiles – 8th century to present

Create designs with symmetry and amazing patterns using a ruler and pencil.

Hints and tips:

  • Work on a smooth hard table
  • Hold paper and ruler in place with one hand while you draw with the other.
  • Connect 2 points with a ruler or curve from a circle.
  • For symmetry, always repeat the same lines in each of the 4 boxes.

Funding

Our standard 8-week in-the-classroom residency is $500 (including instructor and supplies). You can “Adopt A Classroom” for $500.00. Click HERE to Donate Four week and single lessons are also available. Our lessons are cross-curricular and support the California content standards. Many of them can be tailored and grouped to work with a particular unit of study, i.e. zoology, social studies, history, language arts, sciences, etc. They are adaptable to a wide range of grade levels from elementary through secondary grades and beyond, including community groups and programs. Programs are supported in a variety of ways, including school and PTA funds, grants, or personal donations from an individual or group of parents/grandparents. Our program is taught by professional artists who have extensive educational experience. We feel that this criterion helps to guide the student with a deeper understanding of the art making process. For more information, or to arrange a residency in your neighborhood, call 805.653.2501 or email [email protected].
